Native American pendants handmade by Navajo and Hopi artists, mostly in .925 sterling silver or 12kt gold filled, and some set with turquoise, spiny oyster, coral, White Buffalo or white howlite. Designs include sun, horse, mountain, turtle and Kokopelli symbols. Almost all are signed by the artist, and all include an original certificate of authenticity.
Navajo and Hopi Pendants
Most pendants here are Navajo, with stamped, cut-out and stone-set designs; a few are Hopi, made with the overlay technique, where a cut-out silver design is soldered onto an oxidized base. Read more in our guides to Navajo jewelry and Hopi jewelry.
Metals and Stones
Most pendants are .925 sterling silver. Some are 12kt gold filled, one is nickel, and on some sterling pieces the bail or a figure such as Kokopelli or a horse is gold filled. Where a stone is used it is most often turquoise, with some spiny oyster, coral, White Buffalo and white howlite. Howlite is its own stone and is not turquoise; the product page names the stone used.
Pendant Size and Bail
The listing gives the pendant size including the bail, along with the bail opening. Check the bail opening against the chain you plan to use before you buy. Sizes run from small charms to larger statement pendants, so compare the listed size with a pendant you already own. Many listings show a representative photo, so the piece you receive may vary slightly in color and pattern.
How to Check Authenticity
Authentic Native American work is made by an enrolled member of a recognized tribe, and selling imitations as Indian-made is illegal under the Indian Arts and Crafts Act. Look for an artist hallmark, a sterling stamp where the metal is silver, and paperwork naming the maker. Our hallmarks guide explains what the stamps mean, and all pendants here include an original certificate of authenticity.
Caring for Your Pendant
Take the pendant off before swimming or showering, and keep it away from perfume and lotion. Wipe sterling silver with a soft jewelry cloth, wipe gold filled parts gently with a damp cloth only, and store the pendant in a closed pouch.
