How to differentiate Handmade vs Handcrafted Native American artwork

• Handcrafted items are made of commercial materials. Which means these items are made from materials that are all commercially manufactured.  An example of this is a heishi necklace where all the beads, clasps and thread are made by different sources. The artist then puts these items together to make the necklace. This is a handcrafted item.
  
• Handmade items are made of materials that are gathered and processed to create an item. Handmade items sometimes use commercially produced materials that are not finished products. For example: a wicker basket made with natural yucca fibers, hand woven and hand tied yet commercial dyes and a metal ring are used as opposed to natural dyes and a naturally made ring. In this case a majority of the work is handmade. Using the above example a sifter basket using natural yucca fibers without commercial dyes and a natural ring would be completely handmade.

Handmade items using commercially made materials; The commercially made items would NOT readily be created into the item.

Handcrafted items using commercially made materials; The commercially made items would readily be made into an item by virtually anyone.
