A Hopi overlay piece is handcrafted jewelry—typically rings, bracelets, or pendants—created by Hopi artisans using the overlay method. The visible design is a separate silver layer that sits atop a solid silver backing, giving depth and durability.
Unlike cast or filigree work, overlay adds a second silver sheet that is soldered and then chased, allowing for bold outlines and recessed backgrounds. This contrasts with Bracelets that may be formed from a single piece of metal or with repoussé where the design is hammered from the front.
Several contemporary Hopi jewelers specialize in overlay, often signing their work with a personal hallmark. While individual names vary, many pieces feature traditional Hopi motifs such as kachina figures, which you can view in our Kachina collection.
Authentication relies on multiple clues: documented provenance, a recognizable artist hallmark, .925 stamp, and evidence of hand‑crafted overlay work. At LomaSiiva we provide provenance details whenever they are available, helping collectors assess authenticity without relying on a single test.
The base and overlay are usually .925 sterling silver. Stones such as turquoise, coral, or spiny oyster are set into recessed areas, and findings may be commercially sourced. For example, our Eagle Sterling Silver Hopi Handmade Pendant combines hand‑cut overlay with natural turquoise.
Clean with a soft cloth and mild silver polish; avoid abrasive cleaners that could damage the chased details. Store each item separately to prevent scratching, and consider a climate‑controlled display case for high‑value pieces.
